Today, every big corporation worth
its money, is packed with women holding down blue print
positions and leading on , unlikely what some chauvinist
minds still hold dear.
Women by and large, are constantly in check dealing with
the possibility of being sexually harassed. To define what
lies in harassment is somewhat controversial, for it thrives
on individual opinion. Since there's no need for physical
contact to qualify abuse, any sort of sexist joke as much
as obscenities or even comparisons on men's attributes over
women's, might fall under harassment. But when a co-worker
asks you out or tells how good your looks are, turns quite
difficult to spot whether he is steaming over you or running
a compliment by you, unintentionally. It's basically a matter
of context, nonetheless, it's actually impossible to know
what's exactly on his mind.
Sexual harassment is (or should be) any provocative gesture,
innuendo or mannerism that would make you blush without
make up as it may sound as inappropriate as intimidating.
There could be embarrassing as to make you agree in doing
things you wouldn't otherwise, only to get him out of your
hair.
It's important to acknowledge that such a problem doesn't
apply only to men taking vantages of the so-called fragile
sex, but for innumerous cases of same-sex harassment as
well. By the same token, if a customer, vendor or any non-employee
make any obscene remarks, it can also be qualified as harassment.
Furthermore, employers would play a major role in preventing
it. As every company, no matter how big, should embrace
a straight policy against harassment and thus reinforce
it. If a case of abuse occurs in their domain, they would
have to pay heavy fines due to lawsuits and wind up developing
bad reputation within the business.
The best thing you could do in case of feeling harassed
would be to talk directly to the wrongdoer and tell before
his very eyes, how inappropriate you consider his attitude.
Ask him to stop and if necessary, employ any complaint mechanism
to accuse him (seek the company's human resources department
for guidance and support). Most of all, don't you ever giggle
or act sheepishly when saying "no", be firm and
sure of yourself. If you happen to receive black mail letters
or notes, keep them safe in case you need to file charges
in the near future. Don't delete e-mails deliberately, if
necessary an investigation may identify the computer from
where these e-mails were sent
In addition, it's essential not to feel corned. If your
conscience is on the clear, there's no reason to fear being
made redundant or developing a bad reputation in your workplace.
Actually, being harassment a sexual crime renders it liable
to prosecution, which nevertheless would prevent others
from enduring the same situation. Also, in accusing the
aggressor, you would aid to scale down the rates of such
a senseless felony. On the contrary, ignoring harassment
will only encourage the aggressor to press further on his
schemes.
